Passed this restaurant many times in the past. Decided to give it a go last week and what a pleasant surprise. Really warm welcome from Maria Antonieta and her staff. Food and service excellent. Well worth a visit, we will return when next in Tavira.
This traditional Portuguese restaurant is situated on N125, just before the first Tavira roundabout (coming from the west) We have passed it numerous times, but always on our way to or from something. This Sunday, we passed it at the end of a bicycle ride and we were hungry, so we finally tried eating here. This is as Portuguese as it gets. The staff i friendly, the food home cooked in the old style and the portions are large, meant to feed hungry workers. We had good olives and fresh bread as we waited for the mains, and some of their white house wine from a pressurized barrel (makes it slightly bubbly, like vinho verde). My companion had “Bacalhau à brás” (scrambled eggs and salt cod) and I had «Cozido à Portuguesa» (Portuguese stew). By accident I stumbled over an article from BBC Good Food the next day, describing what 10 dishes you should eat while in Portugal, only to realize that we had eaten two of them the previous day. Try this out when you want to have lunch next time. If you like the food to be Portuguese, this is one of the places to go.
