Casa Pepe Espana - Almuradiel

This is a classic Spanish roadside restaurant. It's crowded and popular, though the dining room can be empty even when folks are lined up deep at the bar. We arrived early for lunch, by the time we were finished the place was packed. They have an extensive menu but as always in Spain the Menu del Dia is a good deal. When you arrive they bring out a large chunk of bread with Manchego cheese in olive oil. A nice way to get started. Portions are large. You get a drink with your menu, I ordered red wine so they brought me an entire bottle (You are not meant to drink it all but can if you wish. My wife ordered water and got a huge 1.5 liter bottle. We both started with soup, followed by deer hamburger and rabo de toro, with copious amounts of patatas fritas. Not gourmet cooking but tasty and filling. Nice selection of desserts, I had chocolate mouse, the missus had fruit. Service was adequate, as is so often the case in Spain the staff are overwhelmed at peak times. The restaurant and bar decor are a homage to traditional values of law and order and hunting. Trophies are on the walls, the Spanish dictator Franco is prominently featured, and there are military and police decorations and souvenirs. They are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.

Wonderful experience . Went today with family and while is was beyond busy they managed to provide a warm and personalized service. Raul, who served us, was phenomenal . We had ensaladila russa, bocadillos de calamares y pollo y huevos y jamon con patatas. If you are ever around, stop by. Awesome place to visit.
