Harry's Place Restaurant & Bar

Okay food in a pleasant atmosphere with good service in downtown Bassano. Lots of locals eating here. We had some 'interesting' Chinese food that hit the spot and warmed us up one windy and cold late May evening.

We wanted to try an old-fashioned small-town Canada Chinese restaurant and our opportunity came when we stopped for the day in Bassano (a wind storm drove us here).The server was Caucasian so I didn't get a "what are you doing here?" look as I might from a Chinese server given that I am ethnic Chinese.The decor is very different from your typical Chinese restaurant - lots of blue and bright with lots of windows.My wife has a hankering for sweet and sour pork so she ordered that as part of her plate, while I ordered the ginger beef special ($2 off the regular price). The meal came with a choice of sup or salad so we both chose the chicken and rice soup which turned out to be chicken congee. Interesting and also very filling. Not to mention the server gave us soda crackers as "what is soup without crackers?"The sweet and sour meat appeared to be wrapped in wontons. Not what we were expecting but interesting. No ginger beef for me as it was sweet and sour too )fine with me). Came with chow mein (noodles were crispy) and always fried rice by default. Big plate, lots of food. Not the best Chinese food but o.k.Just a note. The original owners and operators of these restaurants have largely moved on and apparently many have gone into new ownership by new immigrants.

They serve Chinese food, pizza, and a smidgeon of Western cuisine (burgers, salad, steak, etc). The prices are fair. Being a picky person, I was slightly annoyed with their menu spelling and upside down printed pages... but more so by the false advertising of their Entrees section. They don't state that only a select few come with the sides (as listed above). This should've been, at minimum, put on the menu page as an additional note. The server was patient (as we took forever to decide) and friendly; and the food arrived fairly quick; and it was hot and fresh!We settled on Chinese food. It was average price, and a fair amount of food - we will be eating the leftovers for lunch and dinner tomorrow too. The spring rolls are a bit too greasy, but otherwise delicious. Their wonton soup broth was on the salty side, so my husband drank it. The beef & broccoli and the chicken chow mien sauce was also quite salty. They gave us ginger chicken instead of ginger beef, but that's okay, the sauce flavour is all my husband cares about - just took us by surprise. The sweet n sour boneless pork ribs were deep fried then sauce drizzled over it - not quite what we were expecting, but delicious nonetheless. Overall we enjoyed our meal and visit to this restaurant.

Stopped on our way to Banff for supper. We chose from the Chinese food portion of the menu. The variety and amount of food we got was terrific. The service was prompt and friendly the bathrooms were clean.

Well worth the short drive off the highway into "downtown " Bassano. Their work wonton soup is very good with lots of "stuff" and very tasty! Give it try.
