Our waited asked us if we wanted a drink before saying hi or anything else. Kind of seemed like they wanted to get people in and out of there. We got three entrees to split. The lobster meal, the fried chicken meal and the shrimp, oysters, scallops, clams and fries to start. My fave part was the fried shrimp, oysters, clams and scallops. The chicken was a waiter rec and the lobster was horrible!!! It was orangey/red and rubbery. I thought it was prepared badly but the waiter said that was just because it was from Maine. My husband ate it but I was not happy with it. They didn't do anything about it. The waiter also tried to charge us extra for the bill as they charge you on the ipad and only showed the total. My husband asked for a breakdown and the bill ended up being $30 less... def beware. They didn't acknowledge we were celebrating anything. They also sat a family with kids right next to us when the restaurant was very empty. Pretty annoying. Would not recommend celebrating here until you are looking for something expensive yet very casual. Better options out there.
I'm not a big seafood person but I always seem to find something I like on the menu. The food and service are always excellent. I had the crab cake sandwich two days ago and it was wonderful. Can be pricey but we'll worth the trip.
I came for the lobster roll and I can solidly say it's the best one I've had outside of New England. I tried the Connecticut style lobster roll and it was petite but overloaded with the sweetest, freshest lobster. The bun was nicely toasted. I opted for a Caesar side salad in substitute for the potatoes that come with the roll normally warning the markup price for substitutes is substantially more than the difference in price for side items individually. It was $5 extra to substitute the side salad though the price difference on the menu of sides was $2. We split the Wrecking Ball for dessert an ice cream ball coated with a mixture of toffee, nuts, pretzels and more. We were told that the in house pastry chef makes the toffee, peanut butter cups and other components of the mixture that goes on the ice cream ball. I think four people could split the wrecking ball and each get a nice but not overwhelming amount of dessert. The ambiance of the restaurant is much more casual than I was expecting. This is not a fancy, date night seafood restaurant. It's more like all the casual seafood restaurants in New England, complete down to the menu placemats. Service was polite, quick and accurate. All in all, I very much enjoyed my visit to Hazel's and plan to return soon!
Spacious restaurant in the downtown Birmingham area. Great oysters and caviar with chips!
Hazel's was great! I have driven by it for countless years and finally decided to try it as the craving for lobster rolls hit hard. The lobster rolls, although simple, were delicious. The I wish their cold style was dressed up a little more with some other flavors like dill, chive, etc. but overall they were delicious. Service was great overall and I can't wait to go back!
