Taqueria El Sombrero Loco Llc - Bonanza

This Mexican-American restaurant is family-owned and located in a small town. Their steak tacos are fantastic, and they also serve delicious donuts!

Local legend has it that the original restaurant burned down, and this one recently reopened under the name Cactus J Restaurant. They don’t have a website, but I found their menu on Facebook. Although I wasn’t able to call ahead, I decided to stop by on my way to another restaurant. To my surprise, they were open, so I ordered fish tacos and regular street tacos. Everything was delicious, especially the fish tacos—I think they might be the best I’ve ever had!

While passing through town on a four-day motorcycle trip, I decided to take a quick break and ended up enjoying a couple of tacos too.

I must say that, second only to its authenticity, the owner demonstrates refreshing and creative solutions to the challenges faced by a rural restaurant, all without compromising on quality. It can be quite difficult for our local eateries to source fresh, high-quality ingredients, and many end up relying on packaged and preprocessed items. However, she refuses to offer off-season products or diminish the genuine nature of her cooking, which has been passed down through generations. Kudos to her!

How can anyone consider this Mexican food? They don’t offer green sauce, pico de gallo, guacamole, cilantro, or any real flavor at all. There are no bags for takeout orders, and if you want a container for your food instead of carrying it in your pockets, they charge 50 cents for it. The only reason they have any customers is that they’re the only place within an hour's drive to get a burrito. I’m tempted to start a taco truck here so the people of Bonanza don’t have to keep enduring this!
