Overall, I had a positive experience at this restaurant, which has proven its worth over the years. They offer multiple seating options, including an outdoor area. The menu is impressive, featuring a diverse selection of dishes. Our server was excellent—friendly and attentive without being overbearing. However, the rabbit dish we ordered was quite dry and we were unable to finish it. While some of the food could have been served at a warmer temperature, it seemed like the staff was actively bringing out dishes, so it likely wasn't sitting too long. Overall, the classic dishes were well prepared. My main concern was with the hostess; she was neither welcoming nor friendly and seemed somewhat rude. She barely acknowledged us, which left us feeling confused about what was happening. This was not the best first impression for a customer.

We had never visited this restaurant before, and it was a delightful experience. I ordered the halibut, which was excellent. My husband had the chicken francaise, and it was fantastic! The salads were also very tasty. We will definitely be coming back!

39 Rue de Jean has been one of our favorite restaurants in Charleston for many years. We have been savoring their take on classic French cuisine since 2013, and throughout this decade, the quality of both the food and the overall experience has remained exceptional. Maintaining consistency is a challenging feat for any restaurant, but 39 Rue de Jean truly excels in this regard.

This has become a mediocre restaurant. Flies buzzing around the table, inattentive service, and poorly executed food. 30 years ago this was a shining star on the Charleston food scene. Today it is a has-been. There are countless outstanding restaurants in CHZ these days at the same price point from Sorelle to SNOB, I encourage you to select one of these passionate restaurants.

The food and service were very disappointing. We had been going there for 20 years, but no more! The wait staff is all new and poorly trained or naturally not of a “service mentality”. As the meal began, the waiter spilled an entire glass of water on me and without even apologizing, just said “well I guess dessert is on me” and continued pouring water. No visit from the manager or other apology. Then the food was poor the mussels were very small and tough. The white wine was room temperature and basically we could not leave fast enough. Sorry to see an old standard go. Very disappointed.
