They don't have a sushi chef on staff at the moment and that can't really be helped, but I expected better of their other fare. The chicken karaage was strangely flavourless. I don't want to complain about something not being greasy per se, but it felt like what I was eating had been baked, not fried. The wife thought it might be white meat. She ultimately decided she was okay with it; I couldn't get over how utterly bland it was.The sake kamameshi rice had great presentation, but what we found when we removed the lid was just bizarre. The fish had been smoked and the flavour of it completely overpowered the flavour of the salmon. The rice was brown and mushy. Overall, it was too salty and they used a sweet sauce of some kind that left my brain screaming that I was eating pork, not fish. The yaki udon was good, but it couldn't make up for the rest IMO.
It still hits the Japanese cravings! Good thing their old sushi chef is back!!! i specially love their Macarena Roll!
The food has been great for the past few years, although some people I know have mentioned that the portions seem to be getting smaller. The service is quick and efficient. The restaurant doesn't feel overly cramped, but there is still a sense of tightness.
For $20, the presentation of the dish was quite poor. While the pork katsu still retained some moisture, it was almost completely overwhelmed by the curry sauce, which barely had any detectable flavor. Even my mother, who makes curry in large batches with just a small portion of curry paste, puts in more than what this dish had. It was as if they added just a pinch of curry for two full pots of sauce. At least they didn’t go easy on the salt. It felt like they were attempting a pureed style, but it seemed like they used a very low-powered blender to achieve it, resulting in a consistency reminiscent of coleslaw. This place could really use a visit from Gordon Ramsay to set things straight.
On April 4, 2023, my good friend and I enjoyed a delightful lunch at Kamameshi, a restaurant located in City Heights, Daly City, during our quarterly get-together. The food was excellent, with fresh sashimi and generous portions. The ambiance was lovely; the place was well-organized and very clean. Most importantly, the restaurant is fortunate to have KAT, who was incredibly friendly, helpful, and had a great demeanor—an ideal fit for her role. Thanks to KAT, we will definitely be returning to this Japanese restaurant.
