The Canny Man - East Ayrshire

This was my first visit back to the Canny Man in 5 years. I used to love the food, the decor and the atmosphere however I was shocked arriving tonight for dinner. The restaurant was freezing cold, me and my partner kept our jackets on throughout the meal. We had chicken tempura to start which was basically all batter and no chicken for £7.50. I then had the steak pie and years ago I would have told anyone that the canny man steak pie was the best steak pie I’d ever tasted but I was highly disappointed. My first bite of meat was chewy and fatty and so was the rest of it, I left the majority in the dish. The mash looked and tasted like it had been left on the plate for hours, there was a hard layer on top of it. My partner had a burger which he said was okay but definitely not worth £15! Service was slow even though only two other tables in the full restaurant. The decor seemed cold and uninviting, I remember it being cosy with a lit fire and comfy chairs but they are long gone now. Sadly will not be returning.

Over priced and tiny portions will leave you skint and hungry I won’t be returning. The staff were nice and attentive Shame I didn’t have enough money left over to tip.

This has changed hands a number of times and frankly, I was put off on my last visit to the Paraffin Lamp. I went with a friend to what is now called the Padaro and I am so glad I did. There was just two of us at an early lunch and we were welcomed. The food was just a little bit different and enjoyable. The service was good and the décor modern and fresh . I will go again.

Been going here for years and stopped by this week for a bowl of soup and a pint. Two bowls or soup, half a sandwich and two pints. Total bill £31!! When we queried it we were told the prices have gone up. Yep we were charged £7 per pint!!!! Food was really excellent…. Canny Man, Parafin Lamp, Padaro …..and whatever you’ll Be called next it’s been a blast. We’ll sadly not be back.

We used to come here regularly when it was The Canny Man and the Paraffin Lamp before that. First time we came when it changed to Padaro, the food was pretty non descript so we thought we would give it a second chance. How disappointing! There was practically no one in, which should have been an indicator, but the waiter took over 20 minutes to come and ask us if we wanted a drink. We decided to have the Sunday Lunch 2 normal portions and a smaller one. £13.95 for 2 pieces of very chewy and inedible beef, 2 small roast potatoes (that looked as though Aunt Bessie had had a hand in) and 5 small cubes of boiled turnip is not worth it together with tasteless and extremely salty gravy. The smaller portion at £8.95 simply had 1 slice of beef. We did complain at the time as it really was inedible and they took off 1 beef from the bill. Needless to say, we will not be back and I cannot recommend this place to anyone.
