Recently went to Hunter River for dinner and they had a Monday night special on Rump steak. It was well priced and the meat was prepared as requested, the only gripe is that the cut had a bit of sinew in it - about 20% of the meat. The food portion was really good as a whole. It was pretty quiet, so we were served fairly quickly. Desserts are a bit overpriced and when we wanted to order coffee we were told that they are closing soon, so the machine was already cleaned. Suggest customers are asked if they want to order desserts close to the kitchen closing time if they are still busy with dinner to avoid losing out on the extra business.
I don't enjoy giving a place a bad review. In fact i will opt out of reviewing a place if i can't think of anything nice to write.I have made an exception for this place. I went in there on Friday for lunch and ordered the 200gr rump. I didnt have my expectations set too high as it was a lunch special and it was rump steak. The food came out in a pretty standard amount of time and didnt look too bad.I ordered the steak medium rare and when i cut into it, it was well done. Still not a deal breaker for me as i am not super fussy. As i tried to chew the steak i realised i was fighting a losing battle, i would have had a better chance of making my way through a fist full of year old beef jerky.I had to admit defeat and spit that piece into the napkin. Not to be beaten by a piece of steak i cut another slice and tried again, this time i was met with a mountain of sinew. Not only was the steak cooked until it was leather, it was a terrible cut in the first place. If the staff here read this, dont feed your customers bad cuts of meat to make extra money. There are way to many nice pubs to eat at and your business will suffer.
Recently visited the HR for a family get together at short notice and the restaurant presented well from first glance. Once we sat down at our reserved table however we realised the tables were sticky and menus filthy. The meal selection was fairly standard for pubs in the area with a limited specials board. I ordered the rissoto which wasn't the worst I'd had, from memory it was one of two or three vegetarian options and the only one that wasn't salad. Everyone in the group enjoyed their meal and they came out fairly quickly. The one redemption for me was a great selection of beers and ciders on tap, the great Mercury cider from Tassie included. The HR would be a reasonable place if your looking for a fast meal with average choice. Note however that the room is extremely noisy and is fairly popular with families.
Small but adequate menu for lunch including $12 very good value specials. Very happy with the @12 steak sandwich on properly toasted turkish with fresh salad and onion relish with very tasty, tender and substantial piece of perfectly cooked rump steak. Plenty of room and not at all busy on a Wednesday. Worth a try.
