The café serves delicious meals with impressive portion sizes and a fantastic variety of dishes on the menu. You shouldn't miss the fish and chips on Fridays! It’s definitely worth a visit!
I work nearby and find myself visiting for lunch much more often than for bowling, so this review will focus primarily on the Vortex Grill. They've updated their menu a few times over the past few years, likely in response to requests for healthier and quicker lunch options on this side of Fort Belvoir. However, I do miss a couple of the salads they used to serve (especially Kristen's and Mike's salads!). They have added more healthy choices that aren't salads—like offering multiple side options instead of just fries with every meal. They've also increased their fish options, though I'm hesitant to order seafood at a bowling alley. I wonder how popular those fish dishes are. Many sandwiches now come without cheese, which is not a big deal for me; I usually opt for a salad. When I'm in the mood to indulge, I go for a burger. Overall, I feel that the food quality has been less consistent than in the past. I'm not sure if the menu changes or the push for healthier items is the cause, but while the food is popular in my office, there have been significant disappointments recently. I've had patty melts that weren't fully grilled, chicken wraps that used inferior chicken, and salads with incorrect ingredients. I'm giving them a four-star rating overall because the bowling alley itself is excellent. If I were to rate it separately, I'd give bowling five stars, the Vortex Grill 2.5 stars—which is a decline from the four stars I would have given it a few years ago.
I usually have the cheesesteak, but the Vortex Grill offers a fairly large menu, to include healthy choices, and a nice selection of adult beverages on draft and in bottle! Good food at a great value! Hard to beat; especially in a bowling alley, which is very nice as well. I am an eater more than a bowler if you haven't guessed. Enjoy!
This is our go-to bowling alley in the area! We've had several birthday parties there as well and you really can't be the accommodations, the service, and the pricing. The staff is always kind of helpful, and their glow bowling is super fun for kids during the day and as a group activity at night for adults or older kids. They were remodeled within the last several years and now they have soft couches to sit on at the lanes, and the bathrooms are really nice. I also like the hightop tables at the end of each lane for eating during your game. The pizza actually isn't half bad, but my favorite is the fries and the loaded tater tots. You can also find a really nice selection of beer and liquor, which nice. They have party options for the beer as well. While there is league bowling, in general, we have never had a problem getting a lane because it is pretty large. during the summer they also do one game free for the kids, which if you are also there eating is really all you need for a quick break from the heat and sun.
