Hillpoint - Gulmarg

This is a place for the backpackers. Had a really quick lunch here – although it cost more than I expected, but for the view and for the fresh air and fresh food, it is acceptable. This is a fairly non descript place but the food was fantastic. Most of all the Kehva was incredible. Food for the soul after spending some time hiking or skiing.

I have been consistently disappointed with the french fries served in Kashmir, even in hotels. I have struggled to find a decent plate of fries throughout the valley (I have tried everywhere!) as they all served deep-double fried fries which were barely passable. That all changed when I visited Hillpoint. Even though it was not close to our hotel, we stopped by for kahwa and after seeing the fries on another table, I decided to order some.

It has excellent vegetable biryani. We enjoyed it the first evening when we reached to gulmarg. It tasted so nice that we went on eating it till it got finished.

Initially, we were a bit disappointed to see the staff washing and cutting vegetables right in front of us, but as time passed, we realized that this meant we were getting freshly prepared food, just like home-cooked meals. The food that eventually arrived was delicious, with hot and fresh rotis/chapatis continuously being served. We also enjoyed some wonderful black tea with ginger, which was one of the best black teas we've tasted. The total cost for our group of 11 was INR 1500. If you're not concerned about the ambiance and are looking to try a local spot, Hillpoint is definitely worth a visit.
