We found this restaurant after a visit to Ek Balam on the main road just a few kilometers from the ruins. It is a newer construction and impecably clean, including bathrooms (this is saying a lot for a random restaurant set in the jungles of Mexico!) What made this experience truly enchanting was the courtyard out back, where we chose to dine. There was a nice outdoor playset for the kids (4 and 12), a pool, palapa with hammocks, viewing tower, turtle pond, even an enclosure with two deer. There are also rooms available for overnight stays. We were there at sunset, which added to the ambiance. Dining in isn't always enjoyable with an energetic four year old, however, he was fully entertained while we relaxed on the hammocks enjoying a couple of cervezas while dinner was being prepared! The owner hosted us and provided perfect service and interesting conversation (speaks English). Now for the food... The menu is not extensive - it offers a few appetizers, a of couple salads, and about 8 main entrees. Keep in mind they serve authentic Yucatecan Cuisine, more similar to what you'd be eating in Merida and Valladolid, not Rivieria Maya Mexican Cuisine. We started with the Queso Fundido as an appetizer. This is a blend of chorizo type sausage and Oaxaca cheese that was trully very delicious! The kids enjoyed some cheese quesadillas while I had the Cochinita Pibil, marinated pork cooked in banana leaves... excellent on tortillas with the habenero sauce, tomato and onions, and some of that yummy queso! Highly recommend this dish! My husband, on the otherhand, was not as impressed with his. He ordered the Poc Chuc, marinated cubes of smoked pork. It was good, but not great. He remarked that it tasted similar to Canadian Bacon. Plan to stop at Xcatiik, you will not be disappointed!!
Par hasard , nous sommes arrêtés juste devant . L’accueil est très aimable , la nourriture excellente et les prix sont abordables. De plus le patron vient vous conseillé ect... Vraiment parfais !
I have been trying for three trips to make it to Ek Balam. On the way there, our taxi driver pulled over at this restaurant to allow us to eat prior to our visit at the ruins. We totally lucked out!!! The restaurant was clean, and the food was great. However the best thing about this place is the grounds surrounding the restaurant. I was lucky enough to meet the owner, who along with his family have turned this property into a sanctuary. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and very peaceful. They have cabanas for rent, a pool, and even a sweat lodge if you are interested. There also is a viewing tower. The owner is extremely articulate and was able to give us many interesting facts surrounding the area. Including pointers for things to do in Mexico City, which is our next trip. I could have stayed hours at this location, just relaxing on the grounds. If you are considering a trip to ek balam, take the time to stop here, you will not be disappointed.
