Max Bar - Heidelberg

We stopped in here on 2 separate occasions for drinks. Great patio seating and view of the main square if you want to be in on the action. Cheap drinks for happy hour. It reminded me a little of what I might also find in American bars, with the assorted, eclectic posters, cutouts, and memorabilia on the walls. We had fun here and it was one of the few nightlife spots we found in the immediate area.

Totally exhausted after spending an afternoon at Castle Heidelberg we were looking for a nice cafe, which isn't overrun by tourists. A task almost impossible, especially on weekends. But then some locals recommended the Max Bar, and it was perfect. It is located right at the market square, but once you enter you seem to be in another world. The walls are covered with stickers, posters and cut-out headlines. The music was from unknown origin, and I even didn't recognize some of the beers offered. The waitresses seemed to be busy with themselves, but it was ok. You don't go here to simply satisfy your thirst, you come to leave everything behind. I just wish it was always that easy.

Probably the best bar in the Altstadt. No, it doesn't have fancy long drinks. Yes, the waiters can be on guard why not try being assertive? Go in there if you want to drink good beer and rant and rave for an hour or three. The environment in the Max Bar is like something out of a movie, it just doesn't get better than this.

Max bar has the feeling of being a mixture of an American dipping that is mixed with a berliner cafe. it has excellent bartenders, an idiosyncratic and diverse clientele. good beer and whiskey. What else could you ask?
