My first visit with gourmet friends some five years ago left me with truly good impressions, even though just one evening following the famous then Michelin starred restaurant on the other side of Neusiedl lake. So I brought here my family all grownups for a...late summer lunch even though the Austrian restaurant reviewers at Falstaff have recently notably reduced their score. Parking right opposite easy to find. Temperatures truly summer high, so we went to the small terrace »garden« in the back where the air was far cooler. The waitress only came to the restaurant when we were already seated. It was an afternoon hour between lunch and dinner, but the restaurant boasts being open for business throughout the day, so I was a bit surprised. Restrooms nice and very well kept. Unfortunately, it seems that also the chef was taking an afternoon nap home at the time, as the dishes ordered and served were well below our expectations and even the current reduced Falstaff score. We were the single guests, so I would have expected great attention to our glasses, but… Wine list covers Burgenland very well, but somehow it proves my case that emerging wine tourism in the region still has a lot to learn from Italy and Spain – in its very center you do not expect to pay abominable markups for local wine produced within a twenty miles circle. Double the price in the local wine store? Shame! So instead of Tiglat we drank To with the producer only 2 miles away. As to the cuisine level, 9 on a 1 to 20 scale is more than enough for what we tasted that afternoon. Again, it could be that the kitchen was running on ancillary staff during those hours. Perhaps the waitress had at the time also some additional work to do, like making up the tables inside. But then, I would kindly recommend the owners to close down the restaurant part between lunch and dinner and avoid such guests' disappointments. This is not a cheap fast food eatery!
