Interesting grocery shop with lots of local products! We got a ton of delicious ans unique snacks as they had a GREAT variety!
Go here for the groceries but not the fruit bowls. I love that most of the produce is local, plus they carry many other food items that are locally made, which is a nice change from the big box natural foods stores. There is a large selection of ready to go meals and snacks plus a food bar, bulk section and take out counter so you can grab your groceries and dinner as well. If I was rating just the grocery and food bar which I used on the initial visit, I would give this a 5 star; but I returned to try an açaí bowl and was hugely disappointed. I ordered the warrior bowl minus the honey and have to say this was the worst bowl I have ever had 1 star or even zero. The granola was stale, powdery and too sweet, as if it was a ground up cookie with hardly any oats and mostly flour. The almonds in the granola tasted like cardboard and ruined the whole bowl, plus due to kiosk ordering and the fact that the staff were busy in the back, there was no way to ask ahead of time if the granola was gluten free it is not), so I had to take an enzyme pill as I am gluten intolerant. Second issue: the fruit on top was skimpy and still a bit frozen so the whopping 4 banana slices and 3 strawberries were mushy. The blueberries were fresh. I would have thought that at least the bananas would be fresh since this crop can be grown locally.
I had an incredible smoothie! The staff were very friendly and attentive. The store was also clean and well-organized.
I selected a few items from the self-serve hot bar. While they were decent, I found them a bit too sweet for my taste and slightly lacking in texture. The chili was enjoyable, and the mushroom tofu noodles were nice, but overall, the dishes lacked depth and savory flavor. I then made my way to the seating area upstairs, and here's where I decided to take away a star from my rating. It was simply dirty—tables and floors were unclean, and there were flies on the grimy windows. The walls looked filthy, giving the space a decidedly shabby appearance that really needed some cleaning and repainting. This was quite off-putting, and I doubt I’ll eat here again because of it. However, I will consider purchasing products from the store due to their excellent selection, though they are on the pricey side, so regular visits may not happen. I personally prefer Whole Foods for its cleanliness and lower prices. I recognize that Down to Earth offers many local products, and while Whole Foods is more corporate, for me, cleanliness and price point are significant factors.
