It was very old church ancient one so the atmosphere inside of it is amazing holding a story in the past it's a museum now with abt 5 rooms and main church hall .. interance cost 15TL for adults and 7TL for students and the shop and small cafeteria prices are paid with EURU ..the only problem is that you can reach the place either with a Taxi and it can cost abt 250-350TL from Lefokşe to it or by your own car cuz using a bus will make you walk a very long distance
A place full of history with an icon museum. Worth stopping by if you are in the area.
This is a good example of the results of invasion. The monastery is in the TRNC (not far from salamis ancient monument , there 's a toilet (50cents , a cafe (closed and the place is RAF (older people should ask the younger ones what that stands for...and it isn 't royal air force! There is a museum which contains some good pieces and a short walk will take you to the tomb of the saint, but their is an overwhelming feeling of dereliction to the place. The Turkish attitude to Christian buildings is poor, Islam doesn 't encourage other religions, hence the monastery is called a museum . Funnily enough, the Sultan Tekke Mosque on the Christian side of Cyprus is treated with respect by the Christian authorities. Still it 's not surprising, Islam is still in the stone age in some respects. If you are into old churches and monasteries then it 's a must visit the prices are low and its easy to get to with modern roads nearby. However I feel I must add, that northern Cyprus was invaded illegally by Turkey in 1974, as this situation still exists, then perhaps we should not patronise these places. If you do visit, beware of the toilets in St Barnabas, the water to the hand basins is heavily salted to the extent it will burn your eye 's! The saints tomb is still accessible, but be careful of the steps.
St. Barnabas Monastery and Icon museum is situated close to the Royal Tombs between the village of Tuzla and the ruins of Salamis. The site consists of a church now serving as the museum, holding a stunning collection of Cypriot artefacts dating back as far as the 7th century BC, the monastery now sheltering an archaeological collection, and a chapel housing the tomb of the saint.
