Shophouse Kitchen - Melbourne

We live in HK and are visiting Melbourne... Couldn't resist a Chinese place. Lovely, comforting food, lots of variety and decent dim sum. Excellent service - thank you guys, made us feel at home :)

This restaurant is like an old-fashioned Chinese tea-house and the ambience is excellent, including Canto-pop music. The menu is wide-ranging with good prices. I had the pork belly with rice and it came with sides of wombok cabbage and a fried egg, all for $12.50. Of course change of $2.50 ought to go into the tip jar for the wait staff. Next time, I want to try the roast duck and crispy pork belly on rice. This is a great alternative to other fast-food outlets nearby.

There are many options available (maybe too many) both for food and drink, with good value and quality.

In a city where there are too many small Chinese restaurants to count, Shophouse Kitchen is a little different. For a start, it's positioned in the main square of the QV complex. Second, it's a little more stylish than many of the cheap eats in the area.I really like the food here, and it's one of my regular go-to places for a quick and cheap Asian lunch. The menu is enormous! There are so many dishes listed, but after going a few times, you work out that there is a of repetition in the menu, and it's not as imposing as it first seems. For example, there might be a dish such as Taiwanese fried chicken, and then there's the same fried chicken in a "lunch set" or with noodles; there's a lot of variation on the same theme.I like the service here; it's that classic brusque no-nonsense "get 'em in, feed 'em, and get 'em out" approach that I admire in Asian eating houses.The food is great, and I've never had anything here I didn't like. Those in the know tell me that it's very Hong Kong in style. I'll take their word for it. Their noodle and rice dishes are a specialty and their roast is very good.If you want a quick, cheap, good value Chinese meal, I can recommend Shophouse Kitchen.
