I suppose I'm a bit of a snob since I've been to Indonesia and know what the food should taste like. I was hopeful that Gado Gado could remind me of some of my favorite dishes, but there was certainly something lacking. I started with the gado gado (my favorite dish in Indonesia) but was disappointed with the flavor. Maybe they can't get the spices here or they're too expensive, but any roadside stand there would beat the dish here. I also tried the two vegetarian dishes (tempeh satay and another one) and was also disappointed by the lack of distinct flavor in the sauces. There is another restaurant Nonya which is much better (though more formal and expensive) that I would say is certainly better. Unlike what some other reviews say the service was good and quick. Gado Gado has potential but they really need to find a way to make the flavors more authentic.
This is a pleasant, welcoming, and relatively small scale place with very tasty food. It's like "visiting Indonesia" through some remarkable flavours. It seems family run and service is conscientious.
I was craving some flavorful spice-heavy food and decided on Gado Gado. It was our first day in Montreal and even though the restaurant is in the midst of touristy Montreal, it was quietly tucked away. The food was beyond delicious (we tried mostly seafood and vegetarian dishes,) and the staff super nice.
I was planning to go to the next restaurant, then when I noticed Gado Gado I realized its Indonesian food, so I changed my mind and walked in the restaurant. The food is super good everything is high quality, the service as well is fast and the owner is very kind and helpful with the menu. Its ten stars if i can i will give it 100 out of 10. Definitely I will come again and again.
