Excellent!!! !!!!. Kyota 2 is one of very few consistently excellent sushi restaurants in the whole greater New Orleans area. Not many places have such prime selection of fresh fish!! My only other choice would be Cafe Zen in Gretna.
One unexpected highlight is the flan—a surprising dessert choice for a Japanese restaurant, yet absolutely irresistible. Having cooked and enjoyed French cuisine for over forty years, I can honestly say this flan is the best I’ve tasted anywhere outside of France or my own home. Every dish my spouse and I have sampled so far has been fresh, beautifully presented, uniquely crafted, and cooked to perfection. I can't wait to try everything on the menu. The sashimi lunch plate is incredibly fresh and features the most diverse selection in the city. The rolls I’ve had are equally varied and delicious, and they come in generous portions. Then there’s the cooked food—oh my! It ranks up there with renowned places like Herb Saint, Bayona, Le Petit Grocery, and yes, even K Paul’s. This restaurant is worth the trip across the city. The staff is friendly and efficient, always remembering their regulars, and the prices are nearly half of those at the other mentioned establishments. Give it a try—you won’t regret it!
The off-menu rolls are simply incredible. One standout is the Rodeo Roll, which is wrapped in steak that the chef cooks in front of you with a torch! Another favorite off-menu choice is the Corey Roll, named after one of the chefs whom I admire greatly—almost like a sushi deity. Yoshi and the other chef (apologies for forgetting your name—I might have had a bit too much to drink!) are also fantastic, though I've been meaning to inquire about their specialties during my visits. Upon being seated, your server brings a small noodle salad (sometimes with squid and seaweed, if they know that's your thing), which is absolutely addictive—I always order a large one when I go. This complimentary appetizer is just one of the reasons I find myself dining here almost weekly (sometimes more!). The service is quick, friendly, and very accommodating, and the staff gets to know you well (especially if you frequent the place like I do!). They often serve me tea without me even having to ask, which makes me feel truly appreciated. Now, onto dessert! It has been years since I've had room for a proper dessert there (the entire meal feels like dessert to me!), but the last time I indulged, I had the tempura banana with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious! However, the rolls are so large and satisfying that you might not even make it to dessert. My go-to order is the unforgettable roll—soy paper wrapped around rice, fresh salmon and tuna, tempura shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, salmon roe, crab salad (or whatever the crab and mayo mixture is called), with three sauces on the side, and probably a few other ingredients I can't recall right now (cucumber, maybe?). This roll is about a foot long before they cut it and as thick as a wine bottle. For most people, it’s a full meal in one roll. I highly recommend this place and everything on the menu. I'm almost hesitant to share this review—I might lose the advantage of getting seated right away! (For the record, I usually get seated immediately and spend time chatting with the chefs. The only time it gets busy is during lunch hours, so if you're pressed for time, aim to arrive around 11:30.)
Five. The best freak sushi ever. OMG was so fresh, it melted in the mouth. I have mine without rice. You will make one of the rolls without rice if you request. I have salmon and avocado and spicy crust fish. 2 rolls on lunch special for 8.99. My new place is safe.
