We visited the mandarin recently a theater event, as we were already some paints here, although not recently. it was the early evening therefore daylight and you could see that it was a past since the place was decorated and it all. saw a bit grubby and uncared for. eating was ok, but nothing special and not especially cheap for what they receive. in this part of newcastle there are many beautiful, newer oriental restaurants, and I would prefer to try one of the next times until the mandarin has been renovated or at least has been cleaned properly. there is a risk that this place will be completely left behind by the competition if it rely solely on the previous call.
Visited after a day spent perusing the shops. We arrived in time to sample the tea time special which in terms of price 12.99 pp) I believe, you can't fault. My only issue is that there wasn't enough of it... Starters were OK although my...hubby said one of his spare ribs was cold and then he had lemon chicken and it was just a wee battered fillet with a lemon drizzle over it. I had the beef in garlic and chilli which was nice but not much of it. The rice came in one bowl and was fine but again, would have liked more and dessert was advertised as a fruit platter which was in fact, an orange split into 4 segments so not really a platter. The staff were attentive and pleasant. All in all, it was fine but I think next time, I'll do a quick check and see what other restaurants reviews say as this was a spur of the moment. Would go again but perhaps have different things off the menu.
Do not visit this restaurant, the food came cold, was greasy, and really unappetising, so bad we couldn't eat it, we weren't rude, we didn't ask for it to be replaced (not that that was even on the cards) and we even paid, but the...waitress was unbelievably rude. I don't like to leave a negative review as I think it's fair that people make up their own mind, but I felt it absolutely necessary to warn people to avoid this restaurant, so disappointing when there are some much better restaurants on this street.
Been here a few times for the set lunch which is great value. As we have a Gourmet Society card we decided to visit on an evening and order from the menu as the offer is 25% off total bill. Ordered the usual courses ..soup, appetisers, main course with rice and noodles. Drinks arrived quickly. Soup was lovely but took about 25mins to arrive, same wait for the appetisers but the mains arrived quickly. All the food was really nice but at over 90mins for the meal we were getting a little tetchy. Waitresses very friendly though! Biggest issue' was that if you have a Gourmet Society card they add 10% service charge on to the bill then take the discount off so its not really 25% discount. However, a minor gripe but wouldn't put us off returning but we would return for the lunch as its a better deal for the same food.
