This new little restaurant is on my block. I thought I'd try it for a takeout lunch, ordering the smallest amount (six) of gyozas (a type of dumpling). They were SO GOOD I nearly ran the four flights downstairs to get more, but held back until dinner. These are definitely the best gyozas I've ever had. Part of the reason is the thin but sturdy dough that allows all the flavors of the filling to overwhelm the taste buds. And the fillings are out of this world! These are not the same kind of gyozas you get in the many little restaurants that have sprung up. They are a huge step above in taste, delicacy and freshness. No microwave here! Each order is cooked as you watch and smell. The gyozas are not frozen, as they are in the other places I have tried.
Really spectacular, hand made gyoza. The twist on traditional gyoza is slight, but significant. They're delicate, filled with juices and crisp on the outside. The pork was as good a traditional gyoza as I've eaten in 20 years of living in the Far East. The veal and raclette was something even better a completely different but comfortingly familiar piece of heaven. The owners are both lovely and friendly. Despite our coming just as they wanted to leave for the mid afternoon, they were patient and friendly and didn't rush us at all. An earlier reviewer said these were expensive maybe compared to some frozen, machine pressed junk that has six month old mechanically separated meat. These are fresh, delicious and very reasonable for that.
