Would not recommend breakfast, last visit last September ordered biscuits and gravy with hash browns, eggs and sausage patties, nothing had any flavor not even bland just no flavor, also hash browns were undercooked and soaked with grease, I had heard good thing from many people but was so disappointed and let down and just really haven’t been back after several more visits to Red
Shotgun Willie's is a little shack near the town's entrance. It's a favorite of not only the tourists, but also the locals. They serve breakfast and lunch. You have to order at a small, crowded counter, and there is always a line. The tables are all picnic style; we sat at one which was annoyingly close to the (very) loud speaker that is used to call out the ticket numbers. Orders are picked up at the same small counter. They offer refills on the drinks, but I didn't want to stand in the line again. I had the 1/2 lb. burger for $11 and added cheese and green chile for an extra $2 each, for a total of $15. The combo, which includes your choice of fries or tots and a drink, was another $4. The 1/4 lb. burger is a small patty that is cooked on a flattop griddle. The 1/2 lb. burger has 2 such patties. The patties were cooked medium-well, with a nice crust on the outside which gave them a very good flavor. They were cooked like smash burger patties, but not too smashed. The patties were quite small, and I find it hard to believe they are 1/4 lb. each. I think my 2 patties were closer to 1/3 lb. total weight. The basic bun was small also, maybe 4-5 inches in diameter, which was the size of the patties. The bun was nicely toasted and held up well. The green chile was medium heat and had good flavor. The cheese was slightly melted. Lettuce, tomato, white onion slices, basic pickle slices, and packaged condiments were available at a condiment station. I had tater tots on the side, and they were fried nicely; the only tots that I've had better were at Anaheim Jack's in Ruidoso, NM. My wife order a loaded potato with brisket. The potato was large and smothered in melted butter. There wasn't much meat on top unfortunately. Our friends each had a brisket sandwich, Each sandwich had quite a few very thick slices of meat, and both struggled to finish it. They also had an order of loaded tots, which had a LOT of shredded brisket on top, plus melted cheese. Seeing the amount of brisket on the loaded tots is what made me think my wife got short-changed on hers.
Basic burger joint. Recommend calling in your order to avoid a wait. Great atmosphere. I like the serve yourself burger toppings.
If you’re not getting the breakfast burrito (smothered) every time you come to red river (multiple times is better so you can try it with brisket, bacon, and sausage) you’re not really living. It’s hands down the best food in RR and something I look forward to every year I come here.
