Oaxacan Tamales:comida Oaxaqueña

I tried the pork tamale with mole, the jalapeño cheese, and the chicken verde. They were all delicious! The tamales are larger than many I've had before, and they’re worth every penny. I will definitely be returning!

The small tamales are priced at $3 each, while the large ones are $7. They offer traditional flavors like pork, chicken, and jalapeño-cheese, along with vegetarian and vegan options. The large tamales feature special flavors like chile verde, chile relleno, and chile colorado. I usually love pork tamales the most, but they were sold out that day. I ended up choosing one chicken tamale and one jalapeño-cheese. In the past, my experience with Oaxacan-style tamales hadn’t been great. When I saw these were wrapped in banana leaves instead of traditional tamale paper, I felt a bit anxious. My previous encounter with banana leaf-wrapped tamales was a letdown. However, after taking my first bite, all my reservations disappeared. I must have just gotten a bad batch before, because these tamales were incredible. The jalapeño-cheese tamale was absolutely delightful, and it’s no surprise since it’s my favorite type! The cheese was wonderfully gooey, and the masa was moist without falling apart. The chicken tamale was slightly dry, but still flavorful. I've noticed that chicken tamales tend to be drier than pork, which is why I usually gravitate towards pork. I didn’t get any salsa this time, but they do offer it for sale. I wish they had smaller portions instead of just large tubs, especially since I only got two tamales. Regardless, I really enjoyed my meal and will definitely return for more. Hopefully, they’ll have pork available next time so I can finally give it a try!

I first discovered their incredible tamales at the Modesto Farmers Market, and now I can't get enough of the extra-large pork tamale with salsa verde. The regular-sized tamales are just what you'd expect, but the larger ones are about the size of a hearty burrito and can easily serve as a meal by themselves. The balance of filling to corn batter is perfect, and the regular pork in salsa roja packs a nice spicy kick! The staff is extremely friendly, and oh, those tamales are just delicious!

I tried the beef tamales and was instantly captivated. They are incredibly delicious, no exaggeration! The only regret I have is not ordering more. Thank you so much; I will definitely return. I'm really grateful that you’re just across the street from me!

As a Southern Californian, I've tasted tamales from some of the best restaurants and received them from incredibly skilled grandmothers. This place is the real deal. I've tried a wide range of their options—chicken and pork, of course, but also black bean, chile relleno, colorado, and another one I've forgotten. Everything is genuinely authentic and of excellent quality. You have to check this place out!
