Now is gone for good....went 3 times to give them a chance to make me happy, The food was AWFUL, the service terrible....the ony good thing about it was the price, but who wants to pay to eat something so bad? The lonely planet books should send less cheap reviewers and writers...seriously!
We went because it was written up in lonely planet. the service was poor and the food was very poor. there were a couple of not very good musicians who also hit us up for money after two songs and then never returned. we wont either.
I've never felt moved to write a restaurant review until now but the bad experience I had at El Gato Gordo has moved me to warn others. I arrived at the restaurant and sat down. It's quite a nice place appearancewise with posters, photos and oriental decorations. We sat for around 5 minutes and as no one came to bring us a menu (even though they had seen us come in) I went to find one myself. Not a good start. We ordered from a rather clueless waiter. First came the guacamole which was nice. The accompanying chips were not so good. Some were crispy but others mushy and old. I found one in the bowl with guacamole on it already. Clearly they had just mixed in old chips that others had not eaten and just served them again. Worse was to come however. My Bistec a la Mexicana arrived. The beef tasted old and was full of gristle. Hard to chew and not at all appetising. The tortillas came with some other food substance splattered on the top one. I had never made a complaint in a restaurant until this point but felt moved to do so. I explained the situation to the clueless waiter and he asked if I wanted it reheated, to which I told him no. Another waiter came over and said they would go and buy fresh meat and make the dish again therefore admitting they had given me old meat. I told them no and that I didn't want to pay for the dish. They brought us the bill which featured the guacamole with old chips. It's seems to me that they're living on the fact that they're in the Lonely Planet and this has allowed them to let standards slip. Do yourself a favour. Choose one of the many other restaurants in the area.
