The hotel is a stunning experience of how grand buildings used to be designed, however after a good few decades it needs a little TLC and some areas reminisce of The Shining cross Titanic an interesting experience. The service lacked care, professionality and organisation, although staff were nice enough. The food was pretty basic and poor in choice, edible but not inspiring. The beds weren't comfortable but only because they were hard, and not lumpy or dirty. The location is great and restaurant views are brilliant. Not the worst hotel by far, an enjoyable stay for the architecture and access to town and beach. Parking is away from building so takes time after you've checked in.
We have dined at this restaurant about four times in the past few years. I can only speak to the fish dishes, as that is all we have tried. My husband always orders the haddock and chips, while I prefer haddock with a salad. The portion sizes are very generous and the fish is always cooked to perfection, with crispy batter. The service is quick and friendly. The restaurant is quite popular, with customers often waiting for a table to open up. The only minor downside is that it can be a bit drafty at times, as the restaurant is connected to the takeaway area and the door is usually open. However, this wouldn't deter us from dining there again.
I have never stayed at this hotel, so I cannot comment on the rooms. However, I recently visited the lounge on a Saturday night at The Royal and had a fantastic experience. Despite other bars in town being crowded, The Royal provided a civilised atmosphere for enjoying a drink. My group of 9 was promptly served and we found comfortable seating on three sofas. The live music by Dougie Stewart was enjoyable, allowing us to dance, make song requests, and interact with other patrons. Overall, it was an excellent evening.
We had the afternoon tea which was very filling. There was plenty of sandwiches and a huge selections of cakes and scones. Very good quality and excellent value for money
