Great food, great service, cute decor and gift shop. No complaints Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
The Mermaid Grotto is a charming business amalgamation, with a bar and restaurant upstairs overlooking a gift shop and coffee shop below. Brightly lit by garden bulbs the endless ocean theme feels right at home next to the busy Seward harbor. Park alongside the container on the street to the right of the entrance. It wasn't too busy but can fill up at peak hours. We stopped in for lunch on a very rainy afternoon, it was warm and only had a couple of other parties upstairs. We were greeted and seated right away, and got to choose a table right next to a large window overlooking the harbor train cars. Our server Rhianna was attentive and took our orders promptly. Avo Deluxe $12) Three slices of Safeway bread, topped with avocado spread, roasted tomato wedges, balsamic, and cotija cheese. It's actually a nice stack of flavorful ingredients, but not sure the wedges are the best way to serve tomato on avocado. Fresh avo slices and thinner tomato would make this feel like better value. Chicken Soup Soup Du Jour) $10) It's...fine? Nothing special to this soup of the day served with two toasted slices off a Safeway loaf. Should be half the price. Rockin Tacos $17) Another perfectly fine dish three tacos served with black beans, cabbage, and rockfish chunks on street taco tortillas. Theme of the day nothing special. Rockfish is pretty mild in flavor, so your choice of salsa is important Spicy green, mango salsa, or pico de gallo. Unfortunately, they only give you a small cup of one choice, and charge a dollar for any extras! At $17, IMO they should give you a cup of each. I chose the mango salsa, which was a mix of fresh sweet mango and tomato. I also tried the spicy green, which had a good kick to it and really helped the dish. The next morning we stopped at the Cafe before leaving Seward, and enjoyed: Day old lemon raspberry scone $2) Tasty and amazing if you don't mind risking an old pastry. Would be perfect if they had a toaster for use. Iced Taro Cold Brew Forgot the price here but 5 6 dollars. Too sweet for me on the taro cream, but very unique and fun drink. The SO also wanted me to mention the cute octopus stickers that they sell at the gift shop. I wouldn't write home about the food and the prices, but the Mermaid Grotto is oozing with character and is a wonderful addition to the little town of Seward.
We were a bit confused as we entered the restaurant as it did not look like one. The seating area is on the second floor. We had salmon sofritto (sure I spelled it wrong) and 2 versions of Halibut fettuccine and a Halibut sandwich. Salmon sofritto was the pick of the dishes with an interesting tomato heavy sauce. Sandwich was well prepared though the portion was a bit light for a hungry person. Not very cheap, but not expensive when compared to other restaurants in Steward. Good service. Overall a good experience.
Fresh seafood and waterside chic. It's a stunning space matched only by the menu of beautiful seafood. I had the scallops and my son ordered a gorgeous platter of salmon. An early dinner allowed for epic views and a gorgeous walk back to the hotel.
