Viktor Benes Bakeries - Sherman Oaks

Due to the cake experience at this establishment, we've now developed a new joke in our home: "Would you like your cake with or without mold?" Just take a look at the pictures! A few months ago, I purchased pastries that were stale, wasting $45 on Eclairs, Tiramisu, and chocolate cake. This time, I called ahead to inquire about freshly baked German chocolate cakes, and I was assured that they bake their cakes daily. Feeling skeptical, I asked again if the German chocolate cake was indeed fresh. When it arrived, I cut the cake and served a slice to my father, who is 87. However, after taking a bite, I had to spit it out because all I could taste was mold. The entire top layer beneath the frosting was moldy. It seems that not only is the staff misleading, but this place poses a serious health risk and should be shut down. When I returned to complain, all they could say was, "We're sorry." I also sent an email to provide them with an opportunity to respond, but I never heard back.

I also discovered the day-old section, which had amazing apple cider donuts in two packs. These, reheated in the toaster oven, are absolutely delightful – possibly the best I've ever had. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this bakery if you’re in the area. While I have my favorite bakeries, Viktor Benes consistently delivers great results, so they remain a top contender for me.

My son really wanted a Black Forest cake for his birthday, and we happened to be in the Sherman Oaks area. I adore the Gelson's Bakery there, but I had never ordered a cake from them before. I called to check if they had a Black Forest cake, and, luckily, they did! They took my order over the phone and even offered to write a message on the cake. To my surprise, the cake was ready in just 10 minutes, which really impressed me. My son absolutely loved it, and they definitely included a generous amount of cherries. The writing could have been neater, but overall, this place really met our cake needs perfectly.

We have used this bakery for years for all our custom baked goods. My guests always ask me where I ordered my desserts mainly from the custom designed cakes. The cakes are delicious, fresh and fluffy, but not too overwhelming and sweet. Cookies and cupcakes are always a hit with children. The head baker always designs my baked goods just like I ask. Staff are friendly and very helpful to help you plan and order what you need. You will help you clearly communicate your inquiries to the head Baker/Designer. My proposal to go during the weekday as weekends are crowded. Also avoid going right before any big holiday, but do I need to order a few weeks in advance.

Located inside Gelson's, these pastries taste like your typical grocery store bakery department items. I tried the coconut cake, carrot cake, fruit tart and a white decadent cake that tasted like your typical wedding cake. The fruit tart was the best part but nothing tasted spectacular, but everything looked amazing. If you're already in the area and looking for a pastry it's good for a quick fix.
