Schloss Spyker

Beautiful castle from the outside. Area nicely arranged. Nowadays used as a hotel, has a restaurants downstairs, in winter need to inform yourself on the opening season and hours.

This is an enchanted place. On the plain, flat island, near an extended lake area lies this really old castle, a massive red house. You can feel how the dramas of the Thirty-years War have unfolded around here, which once belonged to a Swedish general. The restaurant serves very good food, even for someone looking only for vegetarian dishes like me. The non-veggie options are much more varied, though. It is a short menu, and it looks like each dish is on there only for that week, and then changes. It is definitely a surprise in quality, given that it is not being marketed as a high-end eating place. Walking in the area of the lake and in the confusing and beautiful garden is truly romantic. I thought it was some kind of archetypical (northern) german castle, and I had a really good time there.

We spent two days at Schloss Spyker and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It has a lovely old world charm matched with super friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us. We dined in the Wrangler restaurant both nights and the food was very good. They offered a set price menu for €30 which was good value. We were fortunate to be served by fabulous waiter with a very dry sense of humour, can't remember his name. There are good walking/cycling paths around the area which were good for bird watching. We would love to return but it is a long way from Sydney!

Heute haben wir nach unserem Ausflug nach Kap Arkona kurz entschlossen den Abzweig zum Schloss Spyker gewählt. Da es Abendbrotzeit war, freuten wir uns, im Schloss ein Restaurant entdeckt zu haben. Dass wir zudem einen Volltreffer landeten freute uns sehr und wir haben in dieser Lage ein derart gutes Essen nicht vermutet. Wir haben den coolen Koch kennengelernt und die Bedienung war sehr freundliche. Alles in allem wurde der Abend zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis.
