The food is amazing, the staff super friendly and they have a small store full of handmade clothes and other things, we ended up buying two shirts and loved the food.
Amazing food, lovely staff, I'd go back for sure. Their wait staff even offered us insect repellent coz we were being beaten non stop on our walks outside, so sweet.
I am a tamale fanatic and was not happy with the very limited selection. Got the only vegetarian selection and it was dry and very bland. Husband got one with eggs and it seemed to have been fried, very hard crust. Maybe this is a...regional difference, but not my favorite. Servers did not seem the slightest bit interested in us or our business. Would not go back.
Having read the good reviews, we made an effort on our annual trip to Valladolid to track down La Palapita de Los Tamales. We arrived at around 6:45 PM, finding one customer eating on the nicely-lit patio, a lady tallying the day's receipts, and a friendly waiter, so we sat down to eat. The waiter explained the offerings (no menu), which included a chicken tamale, a pork tamale and a veggie tamale. We ordered one of each of the first two, plus a lemonade (they do not have a liquor license). Within five minutes, our two tamales arrived. First, the one pro: They were both huge...I would say 9 inches long, 3 wide and 2 high. Now the cons: The pork tamale was so dried out that it was virtually inedible. It was largely corn meal, with some veg inside; I thought that the waiter might have brought the veggie option by mistake, but finally found a few shreds of very, very dry pork. The chicken one was better (that is, edible), filled with the meat of (what seemed like) an entire chicken. It wasn't as dry as the pork option, but was extremely bland. The bill for the two tamales and one drink was about $8US, which seemed high for such an informal Mexican restaurant. Now, maybe we caught them at the end of their day, and the food is better at lunch time, but the food we were served was really unacceptable by any standard. If you are in that neighborhood, looking for a quick, informal and tasty place to eat, keep walking to "Mr. Taco." You will find it full of locals, enjoying just such a meal and spending less money than at La Palapita.
