Heyward's Royal Oak Lounge Bar - PENOLA

Trusty Heywards. We love this place for their steak mainly - but they also have lovely warm bread rolls to help yourself to, and a cracking open fire in the dining room. Also a very selection of local wines which are reasonably priced.

We we in need of food on the Sunday night, and the pub was open and it was welcoming with a warm open fire in the lovely old lounge.The food was OK, albeit a little average, but the ambience and the wine was great.We sat in front of the open fire, and enjoyed a fine Redmans Shiraz, for a very respectable $29/ bottle, and it was a 2002 vintage and was well above expectations for the $.Would come again, and perhaps have a steak instead of the fish as it's a beef area and I suspect that it would be better.Staff were efficient and very pleasant as we were made to feel at home.We will give it another go when we next visit!Recommended!

With so few evening dining options in Penola, we flipped a coin and it came down for the Royal Oak. In fact I probably wish the coin had been lost in the grass - because this was a dining experience I wish I'd never had.Hence the one star rating !!!

What more can be said. Bit slow in ordering as 1 staff member doing all on a computer that I'm sure works well for the hotel but caused a queueWe had fish and chips and kangaroo with chips and veggies. Magnificent. Washed down with Zema ShirazOld pub but quaint and provides a lesson to poker machine pubs- yes they had about 10 and a TAB Was recommended this place and I'm glad it was

We enjoyed a quiet lunch in the Bar, and dinner at night in the Dining Room. Lunch was yummy toasted sandwich and coffee, dinner was for a large group with a wide variety on the menu. Our meals appeared quickly. We were all hungry and enjoyed everything served. Good work!
