Situated inside a gas station, Stonewall Diner doesn't have the charming atmosphere you might expect. But as the saying goes, you can't judge a book by its cover—after all, some of the best Indian food we've had during our travels was also in a gas station in Oklahoma City! We placed our orders right away: my wife chose the Lunch Special, which featured Hamburger Steak smothered in peppery gravy, along with fries, a salad, and a fountain drink for $8.99. I opted for the Chicken Fried Steak that came with gravy, fries, a salad, and a medium drink. We paid for our meal at the counter where customers fuel up their cars. Given the ongoing pandemic, we were surprised when we were informed we could eat inside; we had initially planned to take our meals to-go and find a nice shady spot. The service was prompt and friendly. My Chicken Fried Steak was decent—tender enough, but the gravy didn’t have the peppery kick I was hoping for. In contrast, my wife’s Hamburger Steak was much better, with that deliciously peppery brown gravy generously poured over the meat. The peach tea from the soda machine was bursting with flavor, and we both loved it. Overall, we found the place to be satisfactory. It may lack frills, but the friendly and engaging service made for a pleasant experience.
This restaurant is tucked away in a Chevron station and has a very low-key vibe. The burger I ordered was the best I've had in some time. The fries were decent but nothing special. My mother-in-law had a salad made with romaine lettuce, which is a nice change from the usual iceberg. My father-in-law ordered chicken strips and mentioned they weren't greasy at all. It's not a fancy place, but the food was definitely good!
Excellent burger and fries. The burger was excellent with all the trimmings of an old time burger. The fries were the best I have had in a long time. The outside of the fries was crisp and the inside was flakey and tasty. The real surprise was the bottom of the boat had NO grease at all. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling through. The only reason I did not give this place a 5 star is it closes at 2PM and not open for supper.
Thanks to Yelp for leading me to the Stonewall Diner. If you didn 't know that it is in the Chevron station in downtown Stonewall, I 'm sure you would miss it. I 've only had the hamburger, but if everything else is nearly as good, it is a real jewel. A great old-fashioned burger.
